Theatre for the Ears :: audio/visualizations
Saturday 23 October 2010
Scotiabank Dance Centre (677 Davie Street)
8PM – Vancouver A/V Artists Showcase
Adam Basanta & Sammy Chien (Montreal/Vancouver)
Exploring the field of interactive audiovisual performance, Basanta and Chien create large-scale improvised structures that unfold simultaneously in both the auditory and visual domains. Fragments of familiar sounds and images peer out from imposing synthesized textures, while manipulated live objects recede into un-processed soundscapes in an effort to investigate the material's evocative possibilities within a multi-modal, digital context. Each performance takes on its own character, depending on the materials brought to the table by each artist.

"The Objecthood of Chairs"-an interdisciplinary performance

My brother and I have been commissioned to work on this performance "The Objecthood of Chairs" in the past weeks as new media designer / video coordinator. This show is an interdisciplinary collaboration, although more heavily towards the theatrical/text aspect, the collaborators are very talented and inspiring profs from SFU contemporary arts.

there will be a free preview show Tuesday Sept 7th 8pm at SFU Woodward's Studio T. The official show runs for 2 weeks.

I'm working on the new media design/ projection mapping for Rob Groeneboer's film that is projected with 3 projectors in this performance. I think the excitement for me would be that this is the first time we've used serious video snitching to create a uniquely wider imagescape.

Techno Carnegie: Karen Jamieson Dance, New Media/Video & Lights Workshop

I'm working on this fantastic workshop for Karen Jamieson as a New Media/ Video Mentor on behalf of SFU Contemporary Arts,

There will be a performance of work in progress in July 18th, 2010 as part of the Dancing on the Edge festival.
Karen Jamieson

Techno Carnegie

In partnership with SFU School for the Contemporary Arts and Carnegie Community Centre - KJD returns to dance in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside with a project that focuses on interdisciplinary exploration of new media/video & lights integrated with dance. This project promises to be of compelling interest to many of the community dancers who have on several occasions expressed interest in working with light and projection and shadow in the development of their ideas. This workshop will have two stages of development: the first a process of learning and mentoring from a person who has a mastery of the technology, the second stage creating choreography with these new tools. Workshops will take place at SFU for technical instruction and at the Carnegie Community Centre for dance creation. This project will take the form of a series of workshops over a period of time — starting in July 2010

Media Design for Interdisciplinary Performance- Imprint at SFU Woodward's

Dear Friends,

I’m currently working on the Media Design for Imprint II with my brother Shang-han, an interdisciplinary performance piece with dance, music, media and telepresence technology. This project is co-created by choreographer Henry Daniel and composer Owen Underhill with the Turning Point Ensemble.

The last Imprint has successfully performed in MoA in January 2010. This time we’re performing at SFU Woodward’s spectacular Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre

Our work involves real-time visual processing and interactive media in dance, music and theatre environment. Although the visual projection isn't the main dish of the show, but experimenting alternative ways to present images and motion on unconventional platform might be somewhat interesting to you.

There will also be an interactive/telepresent installation created by Majid Bagheri, Xiaonan Mah & James O'callaghan in the gallery before, during and after the show. You can see the dancers performing in the gallery in the first half of the show, then they'll leave to the theatre and the that's when telepresence comes into the gallery. This part of the show is accessible for free.

Best Innovation Award on Preproduction Package

My production package on my grad project Patterns Of Liquid Stars has just received best innovation award- Noel Archambault Award.

I am extremely pleased and encouraged to receive such an honor. I wasn't expecting this at all, which gave me a wonderful surprise.

I've been thinking about creating this work for a couple years already. And now it is about to begin. The first step towards this project is already landing with a very positive encouragement.

I'm hoping to look for more funding & sponsorship this summer. However, this is a already a tremendous support to my project. Thank you for those who supported me on making this package. Especially Janina Schabig who helped designing my package to make my thoughts-communication possible.

I cannot forget to thank the Archambault family. Noel Archambault, who were one of the first filmmaker that started 3D film in Canada. He begin that innovative journey & success in SFU. His innovative spirit really has infiltrated SFU and continuing to inspire us.

A Noisy Brush with the Infinite, lecture by Dr. Laura Marks

Laura is a writer, theorist, curator and teacher who can completely change your life. The following is her upcoming lecture/event. Ready for the most imaginative, deep and mindful experience.

----------------
A Noisy Brush with the Infinite
keynote lecture by Laura U. Marks
Noise Not Noise festival, The Western Front
Friday March 26, 7 p.m. Free.
Followed by a performance by noise artist KK Null at 8 p.m.
The Western Front, 303 East 8th Avenue

I'll be talking about noise in light of a model I call Image-Information-Infinite, which explains how certain things arrive to our perception (Image) from the universe (Infinite) and others do not. According to this model, noise is part of the infinite that is often filtered before we perceive it, the result being that what we end of seeing is Information. So the question is, how can we lift away the imposed filters and create our own ways of making contact with the infinite, without drowning in noise? And how can we appreciate the extra layers that information adds to the image?

Thanks for the Slaute, MOA

After a whole week of class, work, performance and intense class over the weekend, I woke up this morning again with less than 5 hours of sleep again. My sleepy eyes has found a really rewarding surprise in here... I've realized that I'm being introduced on the UBC Museum of Anthropology's blog, written by MOA Communications Assistant Viv Tutlewski. I was there assisting Media Artist Jamie Griffith's fascinating work last week, just feeling how much I love the space there and reminiscing the big show that I was involved in January... Then I saw this! I didn't think that I will be remembered. I'm really touched and encouraged by this.

I'm sure SadMag would be happy to know about this, too. One of our ultimate goal is to connect the people together and spread the creative spirits. This seems to be happening gradually. Every little step counts.

Please also support MoA, for providing such an amazing and inspiring space.

"The Tiger is one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet, and is feared and revered in equal measure. It features in many Asian cultures as a manifestation of courage, power, passion and royalty. The Tiger symbolizes the female Yin energy as opposed to the Yang male energy of the dragon. Ancient Chinese believe that the markings on the forehead of tigers resemble the Chinese character for "Wang", or King. In Imperial China, where the dragon is the insignia of the emperors, the tiger is the military emblem of the highest supreme commanders of the army symbolizing fearlessness and victory. The Tiger also represents earth, while the dragon represents Heaven. The powerful and stealth prowess of the Tiger inspire the martial art movements of many Kung-Fu masters."
